South Korean tenor Jaesung Kim is currently a soloist at Theater Heidelberg, where he showcases roles, such as Des Grieux Manon Lescaut, Steva Jenufa, the title role in Werther, Macduff Macbeth, Lensky Eugene Onegin, Don José Carmen (open air at the Heidelberg Schloss). Upcoming this season is the role of the Italian Singer Der Rosenkavalier. His latest guest performances include Don José Carmen at the Maldybaev National Theater in Kyrgyzstan and take a role debut as Pinkerton Madama Butterfly at the Daejeon Arts Center in South Korea.
He has also appeared as Macduff Macbeth at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, as Cassio Otello at Theater Mainz, and as Rodolfo La Bohème at the Lithuanian National Opera. He has also portrayed Don José at Schloss Weikersheim and participated in the Copenhagen Opera Festival. From 2021 to 2023, as a member of the Pfalztheater Opernstudio in Kaiserslautern, he sang roles such as Oronte Alcina, Tybalt Roméo et Juliette, Malcolm Macbeth, Zweiter Nazarener Salome, St. Brioche Die lustige Witwe, and Heinrich Tannhäuser.
Jaesung Kim completed his Konzertexamen (Meisterklasse) at Hochschule für Musik Mannheim. Prior to this, he earned his Master of Music degree from Hochschule für Musik Würzburg and his Bachelor’s degree from Changwon National University in South Korea. In Korea he sang his first opera roles Rodolfo La Bohème and Duca Rigoletto. He continues to refine his vocal artistry under the guidance of Mariella Devia, Renato Bruson, and Kirsten Schötteldreier. In 2024, he was awarded the Audience Prize at the Wilhelm Stenhammar Competition in Sweden. He received a Special Prize at the Alcamo International Competition 2023 in Italy and won 3rd Prize at the Virgilius Noreika Competition 2023 in Lithuania. He reached the finals at the Montserrat Caballe Competition and the Alfredo Kraus Competition, and won the Silver Prize at the Korea National Opera Competition.
