Biography

South Korean tenor Alex Kim joined the ensemble of Staatstheater Meiningen in the autumn 2019. His roles there have included Rodolfo La bohème, Ruggero Il rondine, Don José Carmen, Narraboth Salome, Matteo Arabella, Herzog Guido Eine Nacht in Venedig, Erik Der fliegende Holländer, Ivan IV in Bizet's Igor and the title role of Werther. His new roles this season are Pinkerton Madama Butterfly, Alfred Die Fledermaus and Erik Gespenster.

As an ensemble member at the Staatstheater Nürnberg in the 2017/2018 season he performed Alfredo La Traviata, Rodolfo La bohème, Iopas/ Hélénus Les Troyens, Cassio Otello, Camille de Rosillon Die lustige Witwe, Eumete Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria and Arbace Idomeneo.

Alex Kim appeared as Alfredo in 2017 with PromFest in Estonia, a role which he also sang at the IBK Hall in Seoul, the Daegu Art Center and the Schlossfestspiele Sondershausen. He sang Duca Rigoletto at the Verdi Festival in Busseto in 2015. He has performed roles such as Nemorino L’Elisir d’Amore, Edgardo Lucia di Lammermoor, Rodolfo La bohème, Tamino Die Zauberflöte, Ferrando Cosi fan tutte at South Korean venues, such as the Korean National Opera, the Knua Theatre in Seoul and the Gwangju Theatre.

At the BOZAR concert hall in Bruxelles he sang in the tenor solo in Verdi’s Requiem with the Brussels Choral Society, the Philharmonischer Chor der Stadt Bonn and the Ensemble Orchestral de Bruxelles, conducted by Eric Delson.

Alex Kim graduated in 2014 with a Master’s degree from Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hamburg with the role of Tamino Die Zauberflöte. He made his debut at the Staatsoper Hamburg in 2016 as Eurymedes in Telemann’s Orpheus followed by 2. Nazarener Salome, Die Stimme des Jünglings Die Frau ohne Schatten as well as Junger Seemann/ Hirt Tristan und Isolde, under the baton of Kent Nagano. He participated on tour with Staatsoper Hamburg in Bogota.

He is prizewinner of numerous competitions, such as 1st prize (Deutsches Fach) at the Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg Competition 2018, 1st prize at the Berliner International Music Competition 2017, 2nd prize at the Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg Competition 2016, 1st prize at the Klaudia Taev competition 2015, 3rd
prize at the Voci Verdiane 2015, 1st prize at the Maritim Wettbewerb 2014, 2nd prize at the Magda Olivero Competition 2014, the Luciano Pavarotti prize at the Marcello Giordani Competition 2013.
