Biography

Young South Korean baritone Daniel (Gyungmin) Gwon is a prizewinner of international competitions, among them 1st prize at the Iris Adami Corradetti Competition 2024, 1st prize at the Salvatore Licitra Competition 2022, 1st prize at the Competizione dell’Opera 2021, 2nd prize and a special prize at the Niccolo van Westerhout Competition, 2nd prize at the Valsesia International Competition 2022 and 2nd prize at the Klaudia Taev Competition 2021. At the Queen Elizabeth Competition 2023 he reached the finals and became a special award. At the Città di Pienza Competition 2023 he received two special prizes.

In the current season Daniel Gwon is making his role debut as Figaro Il barbiere di Siviglia at Staatstheater Coburg. In the 2023-2024 season he was a member of the opera studio at Landestheater Detmold, where his roles included Ping Turandot, Nathanael Les contes d'Hoffmann and Motorcycle Cop/ Prison Guard/ Inmate in Jake Heggie's Dead man walking. In 2021 he sang Conte Le nozze di Figaro and in 2022 Marcello La Bohème at Landestheater Detmold.

Daniel Gwon performed his first roles Malatesta Don Pasquale and Figaro Le nozze di Figaro in student productions in Korea. He received a Bachelor’s degree from the Korean National University of Arts and continued with a master study at Hochschule für Musik Detmold 2020-2022. In concert he has sung Beethoven’s 9th Symphony and Mendelssohn’s Paulus. In 2023 he sang alongside Lawrence Brownlee in a gala concert at the MuPa Budapest.
