Biography

Finnish contralto Maiju Vaahtoluoto will shortly get her Master from the Sibelius-Academy in Helsinki. Her stage debut took place already in 2011 at Vaasa Opera in the role of Tyyne in Ilkka Kuusisto’s opera Isänmaan tyttäret. At the West Coast Kokkola Opera she performed Van in Glanert’s opera Der Engel auf dem Schiff and Melindo in Vivaldi’s La Veritá in cimento. In her native Savonlinna she sang Knusperhexe in Hänsel und Gretel in concert with the Savonlinna Orchestra as well as in the staged production with the ESMO Chamber Opera. With the Sibelius-Academy Opera she portrayed the role of Natalia Sedova in Kalevi Aho’s opera Frida y Diego as well as Maddalena in Rossini’s Il Viaggio a Reims and most recently Oberon in Britten’s Midsummer Night’s Dream. With Opera Nova she performed Ruusa in Ilkka Kuusisto’s Gabriel, tule takaisin.

At the Savonlinna Opera Festival Vaahtoluoto has appeared as Grandmother in Ji?i Pauer’s opera Little Red Riding Hood. She debuted at the Finnish National Opera as Lehrbube in Wagner’s Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg in 2015 and returns there in the season 2017/2018 to sing the role of 3rd Lady in Die Zauberflöte.

Her concert performances have included contralto parts of Melartin’s 4th Symphony, Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle, Falla’s El Amor Brujo, Vivaldi’s Gloria, Saint-Saëns’ Oratorio de Noël, Mendelssohn’s Elias and Rachmaninov’s Vigilia.

Maiju Vaahtoluoto has been awarded 1st prize in 2016 in the National Singing Competition in Kangasniemi, Finland and in 2015 she was a finalist at Timo Mustakallio Competition in Savonlinna, Finland.
